Abstract

Despite the existence of various syntactic approaches, verbal sentences still prevail in the traditional grammar as a main research object. In contrast, verbless sentences, which do not contain a verb element, are not included in leading theoretical approaches to syntax. However, the very existence of these syntagms interrogates the traditional understanding of the concept of a sentence. This article offers an analysis of the morphosyntactic properties of verbless sentences based on the text of of the Saint Florian Psalter. It is shown that non-finite sentence models should be considered fullfledged syntagms. The universality and regularity of non-finite sentences and their independence in coding predications require that they should be considered as equal in terms of sentence formation.

Monika Schönherr, Department of German Linguistics, University of Zielona Góra

Assistant Professor at the Department of German Linguistics at the Institute of German Studies at the University of Zielona Góra. She defended her doctoral thesis in 2009 at the Julius Maximilian University in Würzburg at the Faculty of German Linguistics. Her research interests focus on the problems of German syntax and diachronic and contrastive-typological comparison of languages, as well as general issues of historical grammar, corpus linguistics with particular emphasis on Old German texts.
